“Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble;”
2 Peter 1:10 (NKJV)
On TV and in the newspapers there is so much news with respect to the coming election of a new president of the U.S.A., with media reporting on the activities and words of the presidential nominees. A very powerful position to fulfil as the President of USA. But there is such a battle going on between the two candidates to win the votes of the people, that they are willing to go so far as to character assassination. This made me think, is this a proper way to go about elections in a ‘democracy’? To me it sounds like ‘demon-crazy’, because of the hatred generated through accusations hurled at each other. However, God knows the outcome.
But as a child of God, I am probing into our Election. 1 Thessalonians 1:4 speaks of “knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God.” We are elected by God to be his children and therefore we elect to be Christian. What it means is revealed in Colossians 3:12-14 “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.” He goes on to say in verses 15-17, “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
What a difference between man’s way of election and God’s way of election? As it says in in the header scripture, let us therefore make our calling and election sure, for we have a great future ahead. We have the power to make a great difference in the lives of the people in this world and give them hope. For we are, “elect according to the fore-knowledge of God the Father through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you and peace be multiplied.” (1 Peter 1:2).
Abba, Father in heaven, I thank and praise you for your glorious calling and election offered to us as your children. Worthy are you of worship, adoration, reverence and awe, to whom belong kingdom, power and glory for ever and ever. In Jesus name I pray.
