Writer’s Block

“So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’ And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”
John 19:30 (NKJV)

I stared at the blank page; I had no thoughts, ideas or direction to put down on paper. I was sitting in a classroom (it was a long time ago!) and still remember the sense of panic. I kept telling myself to focus, to concentrate. When I grew older I learned that this condition has a name – writer’s block. Authors are all too familiar with it. Days can go by without any cogitation or suggestion. I understand it to be a source of great frustration to authors; a time of no productivity.

Jesus, our Saviour, is the author of our salvation. Hebrews 12:2 says we should be “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Jesus had direction and purpose. He had no ‘writer’s block.’ Jesus has finished what He set out to do: to save mankind from their own sin-filled destruction. This plan was the greatest production plan this planet has ever seen. Jesus completed it when He laid down His life for us, the unworthy.

‘Finisher’ in verse 2 of Hebrews 12 in Greek is teleiotes and means completeness or perfection. Let us be wholeheartedly thankful for our Author of our salvation, for His perfect love.

Great God of the universe, we thank you for Jesus our elder brother, for the consummation of His love for us in His sacrifice.
