Babel – For How Much Longer?

“Therefore its name is called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth.”
Genesis 11:9 (NKJV)

What a lovely holiday Hilary (my wife) and I had recently in Madeira. The island is known for its luxuriant plant life and while we were there the temperature was in the low twenties while England was enduring a heatwave of almost 30 degrees.

But there was one problem. We stayed at a hotel which was popular with people of many nationalities. Most were English but there were also Germans, Russians and some from other countries. I speak a little German but no Russian, Dutch or any of the Scandinavian languages. This made communication difficult because everyone looked the same. I didn’t feel confident talking to anyone because they might just give me a blank stare back. Even starting a conversation with many of the English-speaking guests was difficult because I couldn’t tell if they were English or not. This reluctance to talk with many of the other guests rather spoilt the holiday.

Thankfully things won’t always be like that. In the Book of Revelations we read: “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ” (Revelation 11:15). A total transformation of the world we live in is in view. And more specifically I look forward to the time when the verse we began with is replaced with the prophecy in Zephaniah 3:9 (KJV), “For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, that they may call on the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one accord.”

Prayer
Lord God, hasten the time when language, rather than separating us, can bring us together to glorify You.
Amen
