What Manner of Man is This?

And the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?
Matthew 8:27 (ASV)

By the time we get to Matthew chapter 8 the disciples are beginning to wonder whether Jesus is more than a mere man. Just as God had calmed down the waters of the Flood in Genesis when “God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters assuaged” (Genesis 8:1), in a similar way Jesus “rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm” (Matthew 8:26). How could this be? Is Jesus God?

To the disciples this was something different. This man’s power was not limited to miracles of healing and casting out of demons, both of which they had witnessed. Jesus was Lord of the physical as well as the spiritual. Even the forces of nature obeyed him, and nature is subject to God’s holy and righteous will.

Jesus, of course, restores tranquillity and peace to us individually and to the church when we feel overcome by the stormy waves of life. He is there with us at all times, ready to respond to our desperate calls for his help.

Later the disiples understood more clearly who Jesus was and still is. Peter would proclaim that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).

Thank you, Father, that Jesus calms down the storms of our life, and brings us peace and comfort through the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name.
