God is our potter
But now, O Lord, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand.
Isaiah 64:8 (NKJV)
Isaiah makes it very clear that God is our Father and He formed us out of the dust. This is confirmed in Genesis 1:26 where God says, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;…”. And in Genesis.2:7 we read, ‘And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.’– What a revelation!
This fits in well with the comparison of a potter, with God our Father as the master potter in whose hands we are the clay. What a privilege that God Himself is moulding us in the likeness of His own Son. As we are reminded in Romans 8:29, ‘For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son…’.
Now let us describe how a potter works. He chooses the clay, makes it pliable, malleable, and softens it with water so that he can shape the vessel according to his skill, as it pleases him. Then the vessels are put into a very hot kiln. God told the prophet Jeremiah to go to a potter’s house and watch him working. The first vessel the potter made was flawed, but instead of throwing it away the potter used the same clay and made a second vessel and this time it was good. ‘Then the word of the Lord came to me [Jeremiah], saying: “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter?” says the Lord.’ (Jeremiah 18:5,6)
Just like the clay in Jeremiah’s story we are ‘flawed vessels’ and God doesn’t discard us either. Instead He has chosen us in Christ Jesus and as we surrender our lives to him, like pliable clay he moulds and shapes us into His image. ‘For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…’ (Ephesians 2:10).
God is not a man. All His works are known to Him from eternity and God does as it pleases Him with the clay in His hands. Do we have confidence in God, our Master Potter? God’s word tells us we can have complete confidence in him because, ‘…He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;…’ (Philippians 1:6)
Abba Father, You are worthy of honour and praise, and you will accomplish what You have ordained before the foundation of the world, and Your counsel stands. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
