A friend forever!
A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24 ( NKJV)
I have had many friends in my life as I grew up and now I am grey, and am left with very few friends. Among all my friends, three of us were very close and stuck together in all our activities. But both of them have now died. However, God has not left me alone. He has given me many more who are friends forever. These are my brothers and sisters in Christ. For Jesus said in John 15:14-15, “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer I call you servants…but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.”
Though I miss my two dear friends, I have Lord Jesus as my friend for all eternity. He has chosen us to be His friends, ‘…who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.’ (Hebrews 12:2) Yes! Jesus Christ our Saviour willingly suffered an excruciatingly painful and ignominious death, even though we were His enemies, crying out: ‘Crucify Him! Crucify Him!’ An appropriate hymn comes to my mind written by Joseph Scriven:
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
O what a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, and what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness. Take it to the Lord in prayer.
The very Creator of the heavens and the earth, and all things that give us abundant life, is our friend forever. Indeed, we are going to be in a company of innumerable friends who have gone before us – even Abraham, who was called a friend of God. We read in James 2:23, ‘And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God…”And he was called the friend of God.’
Father thank You for sending Your Son to be our friend, now and forever. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
