Passionate and emotional
“… he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’ ”
Acts 13:22 (ESV)
I have often wondered why David was called a man after God’s heart. The answer can be found in the Psalms. Most sources generally state that of the 150 psalms, David is named as the author of around 75 of them. His psalms express a heart devoted to God, and in his relationship with God, David was both passionate and emotional; Psalm 51 is an excellent example of that passion and emotion.
God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is also very passionate and emotional in his relationship with those who are believers and who put their trust in him.
Because of his passion and love, Jesus gave his very life for all humanity. John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Jesus was a very emotional and passionate person – he shed tears! John 11:35 records that ‘Jesus wept.’
In our relationship with God he desires that we too be passionate and emotional. It is important that we are not lukewarm with the One who gave us the precious gift of physical life, and who grants us eternal life in his glorious kingdom.
In Luke 10:27 he instructs us to love him passionately ‘…“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.” ’
That is how King David ‘a man after my heart’ related to God; let’s pray that we also may relate to Him with that same passion, emotion and love – with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength and with all our mind.
Father in heaven, it is a gift to relate to you with passion and emotion. All good gifts come from you, please grant us these gifts in our relationship with you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
