“ I will give them one heart and one way… ”
Jeremiah 32:39 (ESVUK)

There are many good public footpaths where I live, one of which will take walkers through the nearest farm to me. Walking back across one of their fields and into their woods I came across this sign.

I confess I stood there and laughed. Thankfully I was alone at the time so there was no one to question my sanity and think that I was somewhat lacking in the upper storey, standing grinning at a signpost. But I was rather taken by the way they had written ‘farm’ in smaller letters, so it can read: Way to Heaven. However if you follow the directions you will find the way to their coffee shop and that could be a temporary mini-heaven, depending on how far you had walked.

But it’s not the one we have in mind, is it? That is not the way to heaven. There are a lot of things we carelessly call heaven or heavenly; they are only temporary ones, or false ones, or fake ones, and none of them are lasting, including coffee, cake and ice cream.

Jesus told his disciples that they have been given access to the secrets of the kingdom of heaven. It’s where our citizenship resides, where we have an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.

Just before Jesus’ crucifixion, he also told the disciples he was going away to prepare a place for them and that he would return, collect them and they would be with him. And he told them that they knew the way to the place where he was going.

Along with the other disciples Thomas was puzzled and blurted out about the problem: “…we don’t know where you are going”. He was confused. He thought Jesus was simply going to another place, another city perhaps. Then he added, logically, “so how can we know the way?”1 Thomas had wanted first of all to know the destination and then realised that was no use if you also didn’t know the route.

To which Jesus replied, “I am the way …”.2 So all encompassing is Jesus as the Way that the early church became known as follows of the Way.

Let us continue in their footsteps, on the path of the way, with the Way, trusting in the Way.

Prayer
Our thanks to you, our Father, that in Jesus you have given us the Way. You ‘make known to [us] the path of life; you will fill [us] with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.’ 3 Amen.
