Who is the Holy Spirit?

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
Acts 4:31 (NIV)

Believers are sometimes confused about the identity of the Holy Spirit. So who then is the Holy Spirit? We can identify with the Father and the Son, but find it difficult to identify with the Spirit.
In Acts 5:1-10 we are given an incident which helps to clarify the identity of the Holy Spirit. Prior to the incident, believers who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, it was then distributed to anyone who had need (Acts 4:34 -35).
There were two individuals in particular who made a fatal mistake. They lied to the Holy Spirit: “…you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land…” (Acts 5:3).
Immediately we can see that the Holy Spirit is a divine person. No one can lie to a force or a power! Ananias and Sapphira thought they were only deceiving the apostles. However in lying to the apostles, they were also lying to the Holy Spirit who lived in the apostles, as he does with every believer. Furthermore, these two unfortunate individuals were literally lying to God: “…What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” (Acts 5:4).
This incident recorded in the New Testament clearly demonstrates that the Holy Spirit is the third person of a triune God who is an eternal relationship of Father, Son and Holy Spirit – one God, three persons.

Our great God in heaven, thank you for showing us who you really are, we do not need to be confused about your identity, for you are not the author of confusion. Thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to live in us. In Jesus’s name we pray. Amen.
