They are all our children

Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.
Psalm 127:3 (NIV)

Children are a joy, a pleasure and often a great source of amusement. Many times we have been told that our children are a blessing to us, to be treasured and celebrated, and you know, we absolutely do.

Looking at the scripture above, does it mean that children are a reward only to their parents? I think we would all agree that they are also a gift to their grandparents, aunties and uncles – the entire extended family is enriched by each child that is added.

More than even that! I believe that all children that we have a connection to, or interact with, are a blessing: children in our neighbourhoods, in our communities, in our friendship circles and definitely, children in our church families.

Growing up in the church there was one man, without children of his own, whom I had known all my life; he said that he cared as much for the children in the church as he would his own children. He, and many like him, were parent figures to me and to so many others, an example that passes on from generation to generation.

Children are our shared heritage, they are a reward to each of us from our heavenly Father – all children, everywhere, and we each have a role to play in raising them, supporting them and witnessing to them the love of our Abba, Father.

Father, thank you for each and every precious child that we know or have a connection to. Teach us how to be a blessing to them, and how to see each of them as a gift from you. They are precious in your sight and in ours. In Jesus’ sweet name, Amen.
