God’s Love Made Visible

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation

Colossians 1:15 ESV

I heard a phrase once but I’m not sure where it came from. It was something like, “Jesus did not come to make God’s love possible, but to make God’s love visible”. How true this is and how relevant it is for us as we start a new year.

If we want to know what God looks like, where should we turn? A verse in the book of Hebrews gives us a clue: “He (Jesus, the Son) is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his (God’s) nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power” (1:3 ESV). It’s not that Jesus looked like God physically, but that his very essence, his character, who he was and is deep inside, is the exact imprint of who God is. Therefore, if we want to know what God looks like, we turn to Jesus. God’s love for the world became visible in Jesus’ birth, life, crucifixion, and resurrection.

This casts a vision for us about our life in the Spirit. We know God’s love is possible because the Spirit has convicted us that Jesus is our loving and gracious Saviour. We accept and feel his love. But, as others observe us, has God’s love for us and for them gone from possible to visible? 2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV) tells us that we are “being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another”. In other words, with the help of the Spirit we are being transformed into the image of Jesus, being made more like him in nature day after day – Jesus, who is the image of the invisible God. God’s love becomes visible through us because his Son dwells within us.

In 2022 let’s make God’s love visible to others through all that we say and do.

Prayer

Father, we know that Jesus is the very image of your nature. Help me this year, through your Spirit, to reflect Jesus in all that I do and say, and thus make your love visible to others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
