What will the new year bring?

When Joseph and Mary got engaged, they probably started making plans for the wedding. They also had to prepare a home, acquire items for living and attend to many details. They no doubt had things pretty well figured out and were looking forward to their “happily ever after” – until an angel appeared to Mary and completely disrupted everything. All their plans went out the window when Gabriel told Mary she was expecting a baby, not conceived in the usual way, but by an overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. Talk about an interruption! It’s not easy to go with the flow when the course of your whole life gets sidetracked. But Mary handled it graciously and so did Joseph, after a little dream from God assured him to go ahead and marry his betrothed and that everything would work out.

What about us? How do we handle interruptions to our plans? Some of us are thrown by small changes, not to mention the life-changing ones. Life never goes as we think, plan or dream. Sometimes it works out better and sometimes not so much and it’s not easy being prepared for the twists and turns. One thing that will help us all be ready (as much as possible) is to be open to what the Holy Spirit may be doing in our lives. Like Mary, we would do well to listen to him, surrender to his will, respond with humility, do what he says and then put everything in his hands.

What God did in Mary’s life was completely new – it had never happened before and would never happen again. Maybe God will be doing something new in us, something we couldn’t imagine and hadn’t planned on.

As we look forward to a new year, we need to be open to whatever comes. Mary wasn’t ready, but she trusted God. And she certainly had the correct response to the news that changed not only her life, but the whole world – let it be to me as you have said.
