The gift of prayer

“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
1 Peter 3:12 (ESV)

God is a holy loving relationship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This special relationship has existed from eternity and will continue forever. Through the gift of prayer, we can participate in that divine relationship by letting all our requests be made known to God ‘by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving…’ (Philippians 4:6).

The Bible gives us guidelines for effective prayer. First we are to pray according to the Father’s will. 1 John 5:14-15 tells us, ‘And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.’

Second, we are to pray in Jesus’s name: “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”  (John 14:13-14). However, the Bible also informs us that Jesus will not do anything that is contrary to the Father’s will and that he came down from heaven not to do his own will, but the will of the Father who sent him. (John 6:38).

With the aid of the Holy Spirit, we are to believe that we have received what we have asked for: “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24). And the Holy Spirit is very active helping us to pray when we do not know what to pray for as we ought. (Romans 8:26).

The gift of prayer is an important way in which God is building and establishing a personal relationship with us – a relationship that will last forever!

Eternal Father, thank you for the gift of prayer, and for Jesus who made it possible for me to come into your presence to let all of my requests be made known to you. Amen.
