Stop the clock

One of the more fascinating themes of science fiction is the concept of time travel. The Star Trek franchise addressed it in several episodes and at least three of the movies. In Star Trek Generations, the crew encounters a massive energy ribbon containing the nexus, “an extra-dimensional realm of wish fulfilment that exists outside of normal space-time.” Captain Kirk becomes caught in the nexus and for a while, is entranced with a place where time has no meaning, and he has a chance to atone for past regrets. It doesn’t turn out to be the utopia he had hoped for, and he leaves to go back to his life of challenge and adventure.

Thinking about time, or lack of it, always makes my brain hurt. We know God exists outside of time and he created time. He has no beginning and no end – he is the great I AM. Living with him in eternity might feel a little like Star Trek’s nexus at first – no watches, no clocks, or calendars. We won’t be slaves to time anymore.

There is a way to stop time now and it’s as easy as getting lost in God. When we shut off all distractions, get alone with him, and immerse ourselves in the Bible, prayer, and meditation, we can be transported to the inner sanctuary where time is no more. It’s just the Lord and me – the Lord and you – with no agenda, no deadline, and no ticking clock. For now, we have to come back to the world of time, but let’s try to stop it momentarily and experience a taste of a true nexus – timelessness with God.
