24/7 Christians

I’ve never been a weekend warrior, but after I strained a muscle digging a hole for a plant, I had to admit I might be one. I don’t dig holes every day but maybe I should, as it would keep those muscles strong. While I didn’t enjoy having back pain, it did make me think of the parallel to our spiritual lives. We face a lot more than strained muscles when we are weekend Christians.

You know what they say, sitting in church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than being in a garage makes you a car. Going to church once a week, singing a few songs, and hearing a sermon is like digging the odd hole in the garden – it only works the spiritual muscles a little bit and doesn’t prepare you for the times when life hits you hard.

I’m not going to state the obvious here, rather I want to remind us all of Paul’s words in Acts 17:28 (NIV) – ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ God has given us life and breath and our life in him is 24/7, not a few hours or one day a week. As the psalmist said, there is no place we can go to get away from him (Psalm 139:7-8), and not a moment, an hour or a day is spent away from his presence.

There really are no weekend Christians – how could we be, when we live and move and have our being in him? A Christian is a Christian every waking moment, and even when we’re asleep.
