Anyone There?

“Then He said to them, ‘O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!…’ And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself”

I had been clearing out an old bookcase (I needed the space for yet more new books!), when I came across an old local church magazine. As I flipped through the pages I was struck by the number of articles written by men and women no longer with us. Some died many years ago, and some only recently. But their presence was still in the articles—the ‘voice’ was such that I could almost hear the author speaking to me.

The Bible is very much like that. Yes, you will read that it was written by 16 or more authors over a period of some 3,000 years. Other commentators will question whether a book was written at the time claimed, or whether this or that fact it contains actually happened. That’s not what I’m referring to.

No, the Bible, despite all objections by whomever, is, at the heart and soul of it, one book reflecting the single mind of its Author. And yes, I mean God.

The sceptics can scoff. They can raise all sorts of arguments. But none of that sways me. When I read the Bible, study what it says to me, note the tenor of its writings, full of love and compassion—yes, even in the ‘blood-thirsty’ bits when properly understood—it is one Mind speaking to me. A Mind seeking my welfare, my best interests, my long-term success. And the beauty of it all is, He is able to do exactly the same for you.

All you have to do is to read it carefully, prayerfully, with an open mind. He’s there, knocking, He tells us in another place, waiting to be let in.

Prayer
Most merciful Father, thank you for your Mind revealed to us in all its glory through the pages of your Scriptures. We seek to find you, Father, to know you, to answer your call to be let into our lives. Come, Jesus come! In Jesus’ name we pray.
