Be A Listening Friend
“But God is my helper. He is a friend of mine!”
Psalm 54:4 (Living Bible)
A friend who cares and is there when needed is as sweet as perfume. How can we be like this for others?
One way is simply by listening to others. Don’t interrupt; don’t advise; just listen. In Luke 24:13-35, Jesus listened to two people as He walked with them, and not until verse 35 did He answer them.
A few years ago I had a cancer scare. Everybody was supportive and reassuring, but what I needed most was someone to listen to how I was feeling. One night I was in tears asking God to send someone to listen, when I felt a peace and a feeling that I was going to be fine. God listened. He sent someone to listen—He came Himself!
This taught me a valuable lesson—the lesson of listening. You don’t need all the answers; just be there. This is a great ministry. By caring for each other we spread love for each other, as God first showed us his love for us in John 13:34, making us his disciples (verse 35).
Simply by saying ‘Good Morning’, or even smiling to people we meet, we can make a big difference. Perhaps you are the only one they will meet that day. But even more, care for each other by listening.
Dear Father who is our greatest friend, please help us to be a friend, to listen, to care for and love each other.
