Jesus shares
Humility is a tricky thing. If you think you’re humble, you probably aren’t. And if you think you aren’t, well, you might or might not be. So how can we know? Maybe one answer is to not dwell on our humility or lack of it. But as our life in God is never passive, there is always something we can do to cooperate with the Holy Spirit as he works to transform us.
Jesus said we can learn from him because he is gentle and humble in heart (Matthew 11:29). But is it simply a matter of watching and imitating him? Yes and no – we can observe his humility and try to be like him, but we won’t become humble by our own effort. In Jesus, we find the epitome of all goodness, righteousness, and love, and through the Spirit living in us, he shares those with us, albeit to only a small degree.
Jesus shares his humility with us too, as we seek the Kingdom life, drawing close to him using the spiritual disciplines. And of course, asking doesn’t hurt: Jesus, please share your humility with me. My human nature tends to get in the way of accepting your easy yoke and your light burden. Help me learn your gentle and humble ways.
When Jesus became human, he humbled himself, even to death on a cross (Philippians 2:7-8). When he shares his humility with us, we should also expect to share in his obedience, taking up our cross and dying daily.
