It Be in the Soil, Me Dear!

“And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;”
Matthew 13:3 (KJV)

Jesus goes on to explain about the need for good soil for seeds to grow in, otherwise the seed might be eaten, short-lived or choked to death.

What, though, caused the good soil to sometimes produce a yield of 100 fold, sometimes 60 fold or sometimes only 30 fold (verse 8)? Thirty fold is good, but not as good as 60 fold and is a long way off from 100 fold. So, what’s the difference?

Surely it, too, has to be the soil. I wonder why I didn’t think of the obvious before. There must be good soil, better soil and brilliant soil.

Different plants need different soils to grow their best. In the wrong soil for them, they will grow, but not anywhere near as well as in the right soil.

Our hearts are like the soil and can be good but not necessarily our best. Maybe, like physical soil, we can improve the condition to become even better soil in which to grow God’s seed of faith. Then the plant will improve and produce a better yield. It’s amazing what a bit of compost can do for a plant.

Don’t think it’s too late to do better, as compost added at a later stage in the plants development will still improve its yield. Gardeners know it’s never too late to improve the soil. Our yield is sure to improve if we get feeding on God’s Word.

Thank You, Father, for the parables in the Bible. Those pictures help us to understand spiritual points and also help us prepare for a spiritual and eternal life with You. So thank You.
