Slaves To Righteousness

“You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”
Romans 6:18 (NIVUK)

Being a slave is not something that the average person desires. No one wants to be a slave and experience the humiliation that is experienced when people are enslaved by other human beings.

The enslavement of people is a significant part of human history. In ancient biblical history, the entire nation of Israel was enslaved in Egypt. Later they were enslaved in Babylon. (1 Chronicles 9:1)

Many people from Africa were taken to North, Central and South America, also the islands of the Caribbean as slaves of the colonial powers. In modern times the Nazis enslaved the Jews and other nationalities during World War Two. Slaves had no rights, their lives were considered expendable.

The reality is that all of humanity has been enslaved by Satan. “…and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.” (2 Timothy 2:26). To escape from the clutches of the devil requires supernatural deliverance. Only God has the power to free humanity from enslavement by Satan. “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14). In Satan’s domain we are the slaves to sin, which leads to death. (Romans 6:16).

The positive side to slavery is experienced when we are set free from sin and become slaves of God and slaves to righteousness. That condition then leads to holiness and eternal life. Being a slave is not necessarily a bad thing! It all depends on who is your master, Satan or God.

Prayer
Father in heaven, thank you for having rescued me from the dominion of darkness where I was once enslaved. Please enable me to use my new-found freedom to serve you and my fellow human beings. In Jesus’ name I pray.
