God’s Angels, Part 1 

“Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
Hebrews 1:14 (NIV)

The Bible, both Old and New Testaments, has much to say about angels. Only the sacred scriptures give us revealed knowledge of who angels are and the purpose for their existence. In the book of Revelation, for example, there are over 30 references to God’s angels.

Historically, however, ancient Roman classical mythology depicted cherub angels in the form of cuddly little cupids with wings, holding bows and arrows. Sadly, many people today continue to picture angels in this mythical way. But what does the bible actually say about angels and their purpose?

The writer of the New Testament book of Hebrews wrote: “To which of the angels did God ever say, ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet’? Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:13-14). It would appear from this scripture that one of the main purposes of angels is to look out for the best interests of God’s children. Jesus exhorted his disciples in Matthew 18:10 (NLT) to “See that you don’t look down on one of these little ones [children]. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my heavenly Father.”

God’s holy angels are immortal, created spirits, and are capable of manifesting themselves like human beings – if and when God deems a situation necessary. Unlike humans, they are a sexless creation and incapable of reproducing themselves. In part two of this topic on angels, we will focus on a couple of biblical examples where God used his angels as messengers to encourage and protect his people.

Thank you, Father in heaven, for creating angels to be your ministers and messengers. It is indeed a privilege and honour to know that they watch out for our welfare at all times. In Jesus’ name.
