A New Life

All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

John 1:3-4 ESV

I can remember the feelings I had when my children were born – a strange mixture of joy, fear and excitement. There is something amazing about finally being able to meet a new life – a new person – for the first time. To be able to touch them, hear them, smell them. You cannot help but be in awe of how fragile and how precious life is.

It is incredible to think of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as a new-born infant, completely dependent on his parents to survive. Yet this is the Christmas miracle. The one who created the heavens and the Earth. The one through whom everything was made. The Word, the Son of God, entered into our humanity, our lives, so that we might all have his life.

The birth of my children changed me. It changed me in ways that I could not understand at the time and in ways that I am still to discover – but in their life, their coming into this world, I was given a new purpose, a new direction, a new life.

The birth of Jesus Christ affects us all in a similar, but much greater way. It has changed all of humanity. It has changed us in ways we still have to discover. But through his birth we have been given a life that is more abundant, a life that is richer and more splendid, than we can possibly imagine.

The birth of a new child is a gift, and the birth of Jesus Christ is the greatest gift of all. In Jesus Christ we have been given life – life that gives light and hope to all of humanity. Let us therefore smell the fragrance of Christ (2 Cor 2:15), taste of his goodness (Psalm 34:8), hear his voice (John 10:27) and feel his touch (Matt 8:3).

Prayer
Heavenly Father, the miracle of life is such an incredible mystery, yet in Jesus Christ we know that you came to give us even more life. We thank you for the Christmas miracle, we thank you that you sent your Son to give his life so that we can have his. May we praise your name forever. Amen.
