What Kind Of Book Are You Writing?

“You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:”
2 Corinthians 3:2 (NKJV)

I wonder if the above verse is the origin of the expressions ‘You can read him like a book’, and ‘She’s an open book’? If our lives were likened to a book, an autobiography, there might be a prologue giving genealogy and family history, then chapters on Childhood, Teenage, University Years, Newlyweds, Parenthood, etc. Each chapter would contain incidents and episodes such as ‘Dealing With Critical Illness’, ‘Beginning A New Job’, ‘Celebrating The Birth Of A Child’, ‘Mourning The Death Of A Relative’.

There are books that begin a story and then let the reader choose between options which take them to different endings. As the author of our book of life, we have the choice of how the story proceeds. Our life choices such as university courses, jobs pursued, reactions to events, and so forth, will affect the content of our book.

Fortunately, we have a Guide Book (The Bible) from our chief Editor (God) to help us. Read in Proverbs 3:1-6, “My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands; For length of days and long life And peace they will add to you. Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, And so find favour and high esteem In the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”

When we look to Jesus, he becomes our co-author. Hebrews 5:9 calls him the “author of eternal salvation to all who obey him”, and Hebrews 12:2 encourages us to look unto Jesus, “the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

What kind of book are you writing?

Prayer
O God, as we write our ‘Book of Life’, please be our co-author and Senior Editor to guide our story. Let it be an Epistle, known and read by all, to Your glory.
Amen
