Leaping Walls

“Lord, you are my lamp; the Lord illuminates my darkness. With You I can attack a barricade, and with my God I can leap over a wall. God—His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him.”
2 Samuel 22:29-31 (CSB)

With the unique and sure hope we have as Christians, we should be the most positive, warm, outgoing and joyful people anyone could ever meet.

But unfortunately, we live in a fallen world which presents us with all kinds of challenges. Some we can handle with no real problem, some we find more difficult, and some can seem overwhelming even when we know God is for us (Romans 8:31).

One of the greatest examples in the Bible, the shepherd boy who became a King, David, should be an inspiration to us in times of trouble. 2 Samuel 22 is David’s song of thanksgiving to God after he had been delivered from all his enemies, including King Saul. In verse 30, David says that with God he can leap over a wall, which is good advice for us.

What walls do we face? The walls of doubt, of discouragement, resentment, bitterness, loneliness, sickness, depression, fear, anxiety, helplessness, fatigue, dread, and mental distress—all a part of living in this world today, all challenges which can make us feel drained and exhausted. But study David’s life in the Bible and we see he faced constant challenges and difficulties. Most of the time his faith and belief in God was very strong and he did many things right. Sometimes, though, he lost focus, his faith and belief were weak and he sinned from time to time.

Can’t we see ourselves in David at times? Sometimes strong and full of faith, sometimes weak and afraid (Romans 7:14-25). But with God’s help we can leap over every wall that blocks our way, however high or difficult it seems. In some cases God may help us leap the wall through professional medical help for some conditions we face. When the wall seems high and our faith seems low, remember Philippians 1:6, that “He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” Whatever we may feel, there is no wall too high for God.

Prayer
Gracious, loving Father, forgive us our doubts and fears and help us to place ourselves completely and totally in your hands. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
