The Morning After 

“I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”
Revelation 22:6 (NIV UK)

“There’s got to be a morning after” by Maureen McGovern was the theme song from the 1970’s disaster movie, The Poseidon Adventure.  The lyrics continued:
Oh, can’t you see the morning after?
It’s waiting right outside the storm
Why don’t we cross the bridge together
And find a place that’s safe and warm? 

The thought is that there can be a future after struggles and difficult times. It’s certainly a message for today. In this world of national and international tension, we need to have a hope for a better tomorrow.

This is what John is discussing in the book of Revelation. He is writing during a time of persecution and also of world upheaval. He explains that we should look to Jesus because he is metaphorically the Morning Star. In astronomy the morning star is not actually a star at all. It is the planet Venus, which rises just before the dawn, and is thus a sign that morning is near: a new day is coming.

This prediction of the return of Jesus Christ is central to Christianity. The Apostle Peter explained: “We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19).

Christ’s Second Coming means that for this world there is a something wonderful ahead. That is the message of Jesus. It’s difficult throughout the world and for many of us personally right now. And chances are it’s going to get worse. But “there’s got to be a morning after”. It’s waiting for us.

Jesus, the Morning Star, is our hope.

Thank you, Father, for Jesus, who is the Morning Star of prophecy, through whom we have hope for the future. In Jesus name.
